Merav Weingarden

Merav is a Ph.D. candidate at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology’s Faculty of Education in Science and Technology in mathematics education. She holds a M.Sc. in Mathematics Education (Summa cum laude) from the Technion and a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Jewish History from Bar-Ilan University.

Merav’s M.Sc. thesis focused on the implementation of professional development for explorative mathematics instruction and the development of assessment tools to examine this kind of instruction. Her current research focuses on improving the communication about teaching mathematics for explorative participation. During her Ph.D. studies, Merav developed a novel visual mediator – the Realization Tree Assessment tool (RTA), which visualizes the mathematical object at the core of a lesson and the extent to which the students and the teacher produce narratives about the object. The affordances of the RTA tool both as an assessment tool for evaluating mathematics lessons and as a pedagogical tool for helping teachers to adopt explorative teaching practices, were examined in Merav’s doctoral studies.

Merav presented her findings at three international conferences, at several national conferences and as findings published in peer-reviewed journals.

Merav also serves as a teaching assistant in different courses in the faculty of education at the Technion. She worked as a high-school mathematics teacher and served as a professional development instructor on the TEAMS project (Teaching Exploratively for All Mathematics Students).
